silivingmag.com • 47 First Families of Floyd, Clark, and Harrison Coun- ties is a new project of the Southern Indiana Genea- logical Society dedicated to discovering, honoring, and preserving the memory of our tri-county pioneers. It is a forerunner project to the 2016 Indiana Bicentennial. Membership in First Families is open to anyone proving direct descent from a settler living in the tri-county area prior to Dec. 31, 1840. The First Families proj- ect hopes to document the lives and con- tributions of some of the counties' early Native Americans and pioneer African Americans, immigrants, women, and children. Approved applicants will receive First Families certifcates and be honored guests at the First Families Celebration in October which will include re-enactors, pioneer artisans, frontier period enter- tainment, historians, and genealogists. A workshop about how to research early families in the three counties will be held May 1 at 7 p.m. at the New Alba- ny-Floyd County Library. Melissa Wiseh- eart, library associate at the New Albany- Floyd County Public Library, and Allison Fredrickson, genealogy and local history librarian at the Jefersonville Township Public Library (Clark County) will chair the class. Individuals are encouraged to contact sigsvolunteer@gmail.com for more infor- mation and to obtain application forms for the First Families project. The Southern Indiana Genealogical Society meetings are the frst Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. in the Stras- sweg Auditorium of the New Albany- Floyd County Library, 180 W. Spring St., New Albany, and always feature a guest speaker or program of historical or ge- nealogical signifcance.
